Steve Yianni appointed Chief Executive of transport systems catapult

?????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????The new technology and innovation centre for integrated transport systems has appointed Steve Yianni as its Chief Executive today.

The Catapult centre, which is being set up by the Technology Strategy Board, will focus on innovation for efficient and sustainable ways to move people and goods (freight) across national transport systems including road, rail, sea and air. Helping business bring products and services to market that will help to ease congestion globally and prepare for the growing requirements for transport systems of the future.

Will Whitehorn, recently appointed Chairman of the Catapult, welcomed Mr Yianni: “It is fantastic that we have been able to recruit an individual with the great depth of both road and rail engineering and technical experience that Steve brings with him. His work at Network Rail has been highly praised and his engineering achievements at JCB Group contributed to engineering excellence across the company, enhancing its reputation as a world-class company.

Iain Gray, Chief Executive of the Technology Strategy Board said: “I am delighted that Steve Yianni has agreed to join the Transport Systems Catapult.  He brings a wealth of real business experience across the transport network that will help UK businesses develop integrated transport services.”

Mr Gray continued: “The Transport Systems Catapult will position the UK as the leading provider of innovative and integrated transport solutions to the rest of the world, accessing a global market estimated to be worth £900bn by 2025.”

Commenting on his appointment Steve Yianni said: “I am delighted to be joining the Transport Systems Catapult as Chief Executive. The integration of transport systems presents many opportunities for UK businesses and I look forward to working with the industries across road, rail, marine and aviation to bring these to reality”.

Starting his new role on August 1st Mr Yianni will drive the Catapult’s rapid growth and deliver its ambitious vision for the UK transport industry and improve domestic transport links.

Mr Yianni joins the Catapult from Network Rail. As Technical Director he has been pivotal in delivering the 30-year rail technical strategy, which received industry-wide recognition. He also contributed to the engineering success of the Ford Motor Company and JCB gaining over two decades of experience in leading manufacturing organisations.

The Transport Systems Catapult is part of a network of world-leading technology and innovation centres established and overseen by the Technology Strategy Board as a long-term investment that will open up global opportunities for the UK and generate economic growth for the future. With investment from public and private sectors of around £1bn over the coming few years, Catapults represent one of the most important developments in UK innovation and technology, and they will make a major impact for years to come.

The Transport Systems Catapult will be active later this year.
