Pan Ocean orders OCTOPUS-Onboard for two heavy lift vessels

The Korean based global shipping company Pan Ocean, has ordered OCTOPUS-Onboard system from Amarcon for two semi-submersible heavy lift vessels. The state-of-the-art ship monitoring and advisory system will support the vessels’ route planning, optimisation of speed, heading and fuel consumption.

For the two semi-submerging heavy lift vessels, the Sun Rise and the Sun Shine, Amarcon will deliver an OCTOPUS-Onboard installation including motion monitoring and forecasting. The system will increase workability and safety during heavy lift transportation projects. A motion monitor system (TMS-3) based on three accelerometers, will also be installed on the two heavy freight cargo vessels. This way multiple critical locations of the vessel, for instance the cargo, can be measured and displayed on the bridge of the vessel.

By using OCTOPUS-Online, the vessel owner can download and display all measured motions and accelerations that are collected from the vessel. Authorized users have access to this secured web-portal. The data is downloadable for further evaluation in the office. Heavy freight cargo shipping companies often provide separate log-ins to the cargo-owner so they can be up to date on the actual status and location of their cargo.

With this latest order for Pan Ocean, Amarcon has equipped more than 80% of semi-submersible heavy lift vessels sailing across the globe with the OCTOPUS suite of products. General manager from Amarcon, Leon Adegeest said: “Semi-submersible heavy lift vessels operate in highly demanding conditions where ship monitoring and advisory data is key to safe and efficient operations. We designed the OCTOPUS-Onboard system to meet the requirements of these special vessels and are pleased that an increasing number of leading shipping companies such as Pan Ocean rely on our system to optimise vessel operations.”

“For this order, we worked closely together with ABB’s sales team in Korea. For us as Amarcon it is really positive to see that our products are embraced within the global ABB organisation and ABB sees our products as something that will help to realize ABB’s long-term goals within the maritime industry.”

Amarcon, a fully owned subsidiary of ABB, provides monitoring and forecasting software solutions for performance and availability optimisation of sea-going vessels, and is the leader in vessel motion prediction solutions. ABB acquired Amarcon in august 2012 in order to strengthen its long-term growth strategy in vessel information and control systems. Amarcon and ABB offer the widest portfolio of marine advisory and optimisation systems to the maritime market.
