Greek shipping stands with EU decision makers amid geopolitical uncertainty

The President of the Union of Greek Shipowners (UGS), Ms Melina Travlos, and members of the UGS Board of Directors met this week with the European Commissioner for Sustainable Transport and Tourism, Mr Apostolos Tzitzikostas, in Brussels to confirm the continuing commitment of Greek shipping to the long-term security and economic resilience of the EU. The discussions underscored the vital role of shipping in ensuring Europe’s food, energy and supply chain security, and the sector’s role in maintaining European competitiveness.

As a key pillar of the European economy and a driver of geopolitical strength, EU shipping is an essential enabler of trade and prosperity. The meeting took place against the backdrop of the European Commission’s focus on enhancing industrial competitiveness and shaping new policy initiatives. The UGS reaffirmed its commitment to collaborating with policymakers to ensure a regulatory environment that supports both global competitiveness and sustainability.

The delegation highlighted the need for a balanced and efficient global regulatory framework that reflects the international nature of shipping. At the European level, a strategic and tailored approach is necessary to safeguard the industry’s future, ensuring that it remains a strong contributor to the EU’s industrial strategy and economic stability.

“Greek shipping, with 61% of the EU-controlled fleet, is the bedrock of EU shipping. A thriving shipping sector is the foundation of Europe’s global leadership. Its resilience is unparalleled. But it should not be taken for granted. The EU must make every effort not only to maintain but enhance EU shipping’s standing against fierce global competition. We call on the EU to foster an environment where shipping can continue to thrive - driving growth, innovation and sustainability,” said Ms. Melina Travlos.

The UGS remains committed to constructive engagement with EU institutions to ensure that European shipping continues to serve as a cornerstone of Europe’s economic strength and strategic resilience.
