Journey to Net Zero
The industry is under pressure to achieve net zero carbon emissions by 2050, and whilst operators are taking different approaches, it is becoming clear that we must move fast beyond temporary fixes and adopt longer term strategies including the use of alternative or next-generation fuels, LNG, ammonia, or hydrogen. What this means for crewing, is that it is crucial that our seafarers have access to the right levels of training to acquire the necessary competencies to ensure cargo, vessel and life are safe at sea.

Crew Supply
Staff shortages and growing irregularities continue to provide challenges. The well-documented shortage of skilled seafarers has since been exacerbated by the conflict in Ukraine. The rise of sub-par training programmes and the issuing of fraudulent certificates will further aggravate the current crewing shortage. There are many ways in which flag states are engaging in solutions to prevent and alleviate the looming crew shortage, as well there are various new and promising crew management solutions, designed to make it easier and safer to deploy crew and cater to their needs.

Training & Safety
Technology is rapidly advancing and with it, training delivery. More training is now being delivered online, through e-learning and assessment, VR or simulators. There is now a concern about the level of competency, can online learning ever really replace face-to-face? The industry must strike the right balance between in-person and e-learning, in a way to optimise it and not to affect standards. At the centre of all of this, stands decarbonisation and the need to update STCW.
