ATPI Marine & Energy and Qatar Airways share sustainability best practices at Hamburg Maritime Forum

Reducing the environmental impact of crew travel are among the key topics being explored at the 2021 edition of the Hamburg Maritime Forum taking place this week. Specialist travel management business ATPI Marine & Energy is joining forces with Qatar Airways to share best practice and expertise with attendees in order to support shipping businesses in their quest towards decarbonisation.

Speaking at the live event in person, Pippa Ganderton (pictured), product director of ATPI Halo – the dedicated sustainability division of ATPI Marine & Energy – will lead a session entitled ‘Decarbonisation: Navigating a more sustainable travel programme for shipping’, alongside Ronny de Lange, general manager for Central Europe, Qatar Airways.

Addressing the importance of reducing emissions from crew travel as part of Scope 3 commitments to sustainability reporting, the session will outline how shipping businesses can take practical steps towards improving the green credentials of their travel.

Pippa Ganderton, product director, ATPI Halo and ATPI Marine & Energy said: “Decarbonisation in the shipping industry is focused on the vessels themselves, however, many shipping companies do not realise that up to 15 per cent of their carbon emissions can come from crew travel alone.

“Recording and reporting travel emissions data accurately, working hard to reduce it, and offsetting using robust and accredited schemes are important elements of any sustainability policy. Supporting the shipping industry to meet and exceed their decarbonisation targets is a key area of our business.”

The consultancy of ATPI Halo includes working with clients to schedule crew travel via routes with fewer legs to decrease the greenhouse gas emissions from flights, choosing airlines with greater sustainability credentials, and improved crew rota planning to reduce the need for last minute changes.

It is the first time that ATPI Marine & Energy has attended the Hamburg Maritime Forum, and follows the acquisition of Hamburg Süd Reiseagentur GmbH, now renamed ATPI Hamburg GmbH, by parent company the ATPI Group in 2021.
