Nor-Shipping’s focus on ‘green shipping’ kicked off with the Clean Shipping Awards 2009 during its opening conference, in which over 60 companies were reviewed for three separate award categories.

Sturla Henriksen, Director General of the Norwegian Shipowners’ Association, addressed the assembly with particular emphasis on how environmental initiatives and performance standards will shape the future of the shipping industry and how it is imperative for companies to adopt measures to combat shipping’s contribution to global greenhouse gas emissions.

The Clean Sea award went to Royal Caribbean Cruises for its waste water treatment program; the Clean Air award was given to Teekay Corporation for its emissions-reducing operational measures, and Stena Bulk won the Clean Innovation award for its eco-designed gas-electric driven chemical tanker project.

According to Tollef Schiander, Director of Nor-Shipping, “the Norwegian shipping industry is internationally recognised for being a pioneer in the development of solutions and technologies to manage a broad range of environmental issues. The Clean Shipping Awards will serve to support these efforts and reward any company with the vision and expertise to develop good environmental solutions.”

With the expectation that regulatory frameworks for environmental performance standards will enter into force in the near future and will undergo serious consideration in Copenhagen this year, Nor-Shipping also announced that it will establish a fourth award at next year’s event – the Clean Regulator award.
