Classification society ABS today announced that its registered fleet has surpassed 200 million gross tons, with approximately 12,000 vessels representing 105 flag States currently registered.
“This important milestone reflects our commitment to providing best-in-class service to the marine and offshore industries,” said ABS Chairman and CEO Christopher J. Wiernicki. “Over the past decade, we have made strategic investments in research and technology, workforce development and training programs in order to meet the evolving needs of our client’s worldwide.”
Since 2000, ABS has doubled the tonnage of its registered fleet; a key factor in the expansion has been the society’s leadership position in the new vessel order book. More than 21% of new vessels on order are set for ABS class, which is the largest percentage of any classification society in the world.
“The success of ABS is really a testament to the industries we serve,” said Wiernicki. “We are proud to work alongside some of the very best in the marine and offshore industries. It is that spirit of cooperation that allows ABS to continue to be a leader in the classification industry.”
Throughout its 150 years of service, ABS has worked to promote the security of life and property and to protect the natural environment. Today ABS carries out this mission through key research and technology projects helping to identify practical solutions to the many challenges being faced by the marine and offshore industry. Whether assessing the impact of regulatory requirements or conducting analysis to improve energy efficiency, ABS’s team of world-class professionals provide tailored services to meet the unique circumstances of each client.
“At ABS, we are committed to quality services that leverage innovative thinking,” said Mr Wiernicki. “Our goal is to help the industry construct and operate maritime and offshore assets in a safe, efficient and environmentally responsible manner.”
